Design and planning permission

As the nature-house idea began to take hold, we started looking casually for a plot. Few places offered everything we needed: plenty of space, pleasant surroundings, and schools and transport nearby. Then a plot appeared in Brottby. It was a little more expensive than we had intended, but it looked promising. Suddenly we owned a piece of land, and everything started moving.

Once we had found the plot, we began the design work. We wrote down everything we wanted from our new home: both the essentials and the things that would simply be nice to have.

We also looked for appealing floor plans and made our own sketches. This was an early computer model of one possible solution.

An early computer model.

Because the plot lies within an area designated as nationally important for its cultural environment, we also met Vallentuna's municipal conservation officer for guidance.

Through Anders at Ecorelief, we met Fredrik Ohlson of Tailor Made Arkitekter, who is enthusiastic about nature houses. We presented our ideas and sketches and gave him a free hand. A few weeks later, he showed us his first proposal. He had captured most of what we wanted and created an appealing home. The nature-house concept allowed some unusual solutions: many doors into the greenhouse, large terraces and a plant-covered façade. All were intended to strengthen the connection between indoors and outdoors and give us more space to use whenever the greenhouse temperature allowed.

The design developed in stages as we approached the planning application. We submitted the first application in June 2013.

The municipality soon said the building was too tall for its setting in an area of cultural-environment interest. Both the officers and the committee seemed opposed. In the meantime, we had also realised that the greenhouse could be redesigned to be more interesting and less tall.

After the summer, we met the municipality again to try to establish what they might accept.

We developed the original proposal further, moving the greenhouse ridge off-centre and turning the house through 90 degrees. This lowered the greenhouse and made the house fit its enclosure better. With less space above the house for rising warm air, we added two sliding doors to the greenhouse gable so it could be aired quickly if necessary. We also extended the terrace, creating a balcony to the west and a lookout to the east.

We submitted the second planning application in November. It finally reached the committee at the end of April. Permission was granted!

On 4 June, the permission was appealed.

The appeal was withdrawn in September 2014, and detailed design work began.

Bygglovsansökan 2 lämnades in i november. Ärendet kom äntligen upp i nämnden i slutet av april. Bygglovet godkändes! 4 juni överklagades bygglovet.. I september 2014 drogs överklagandet tillbaka och projekteringen startade.
