The world's first nature house was designed by Bengt Warne in the 1970s and built in Saltsjöbaden. The idea was a home that looked after its inhabitants without polluting its surroundings. The original account described several ways of achieving this:
- A greenhouse around the ordinary house creates a sheltered zone.
- Wastewater is treated in growing beds around the house or on its roof.
- Plants clean the water and use its nutrients to produce fruit and vegetables.
- Plants also clean air from the house.
- The greenhouse buffer creates a climate compared in the original text with southern Europe, reducing the energy needed to heat the house.
- The glass protects against wind and precipitation, reducing weathering and heat loss.
- Filtering ultraviolet radiation through glass was described as reducing maintenance.
- The greenhouse allows the house to have a flat roof used for terraces or storage.
The project was documented in På akacians villkor (1993), ISBN 91-86424-09-2, written with Marianne Fredriksson. At the time of this page, the book was difficult to obtain.
In the book, Bengt set out the thinking behind the nature house and four principles for living:
- Attend to real needs rather than artificial ones. Technology should serve the fundamental laws of biology. In how we live and build, we must learn from nature.
- Let our homes work with nature. Organisms live from flows such as sun, wind, rain, soil and plants; we can shape houses according to the same principles.
- Let inhabitants control flows and cycles themselves. Give us room to light a fire, air the house, water, grow things and adapt our homes to our own needs and wishes.
- Use sophisticated but environmentally considerate technology where nature's energy is not enough.
His ideas led to several nature houses in Sweden and abroad.
Before the nature house came Näckroshuset, the Water Lily House, in Salem. Its rooms were arranged around a small courtyard with a pool, covered by glass that could open like a water lily.
In the late 1980s, Bengt designed the wastewater-treatment facility at Stensund Folk High School. This developed the treatment methods used in the nature house, cleaning water naturally through several stages before discharge. Fish were even raised in part of the water.
More nature houses were also built in Germany.
In 2004, he helped Ecorelief and Ecosol with their nature houses.
Bengt died in 2006.
