The garage foundation is taking shape. On Monday, we finished the final gravel layer and the ducts for the incoming electricity, in miserable weather: rain and only a few degrees above freezing. Unfortunately, the foundation elements were delayed, so we spent much of Tuesday waiting. They did not arrive until dusk.

One problem with waiting is that the gravel can freeze, and you should not lay a foundation on frozen ground. Naturally, it froze on Tuesday. Fortunately, today—Wednesday—was above freezing. After some waiting and digging, it thawed. We then positioned the L-shaped edge elements. There was a great deal of measuring and adjusting to get everything right.

One element on each side had to be cut to give the foundation the correct dimensions. These garage elements have a raised plinth to protect the walls, so we also had to cut down the entrances at the doors.

The perimeter is nearly complete, with the electrical ducts projecting upwards.

Next came two staggered layers of insulation, 200 mm in total, to break the thermal bridges. The spacers for the edge-beam reinforcement are in place too.

The slab is nearly ready, with the door openings cut but no reinforcement yet. Then winter arrived! We stopped at this stage because the concrete will not arrive until Friday: five cubic metres of heated concrete, to keep it from freezing before the curing reaction starts producing its own heat.
Hopefully, the snow will melt by tomorrow so we can install the reinforcement and cover everything with a tarpaulin before Friday. Tonight will be cold, but at least shovelling is easy while there is no steel in the way.

Finally, we backfilled outside the edge beams so they can withstand the pressure of the concrete.
The municipality also finished setting out. Their instruments are impressively precise—and priced accordingly. Unfortunately, some bedrock still obstructs the service building, exactly where it did not break properly. The simplest solution would be to move the building 1.5 metres south, but we need the municipality's approval first…
