Time for an update! All the concrete needed at this stage is finally poured. The piers and slab are finished, and the formwork has been removed.
Most of the piers turned out well. A few forms split slightly, and two piers ended up in the wrong position, but nothing needs immediate attention.
The slab was poured, but it started raining while we waited to power-float it. There was so much rain that finishing it was impossible. We will see whether it needs grinding or self-levelling compound before we assemble the house.
Anders from Ecorelief visited last week to review the water-cycle system, and we have settled its layout. Three growing beds will occupy all the space south and east of the house. That leaves us free to arrange planting, open water and paving, and to change things when we discover something is in the wrong place.
The beds will be partly filled with gravel and the rest with pumice. Pumice at the top provides plenty of cavities for microorganisms. Distribution pipes about 10 cm below the surface will spread the water through each bed, with the rest of the growing medium below.
EPDM pond liner goes at the bottom. Drainage pipes on it collect filtered water and return it to the service building before it continues to the next bed.
Several things are moving at once. A truck is on its way from Estonia with the first timber for the garage, service building and house. It arrives on Monday morning. If the weather allows, we hope to start assembling the garage immediately.
Later that day, Drivadan will arrive to begin the greenhouse, which is expected to take about four weeks. Hopefully, all the material will fit on the plot. 🙂
The holidays start in just under a month, when building becomes full-time. With luck, Drivadan will be finished and we can start on the house.
The garage slab is waiting for materials and assembly. This is the first time it has been clear since the concrete cured in winter.

The house slab and some of the piers. Thor-Björn built a small ramp so Drivadan can drive onto the slab and assemble the greenhouse from there.

All those piers give it a castle-like feel. The gaps will eventually be filled with blockwork, but that can wait.
