  • Almost out of the ground!

They say the budget becomes easier to control once you are out of the ground. We are nearly there! For now, it has gone completely off the rails: the groundworks and all the concrete have cost far more than expected.

  • The woodcock flies—and so does the raven

There is not much time for updates, but here is a short one. Spring is properly here, even if some mornings are still frosty. No more ice and snow. The daffodils are flowering, and the sun feels warm. In the evenings, a woodcock flies around the plot, calling. Lovely!

  • Stone by stone

A progress photograph. We keep laying blocks, and the wall slowly grows. We have also poured more concrete so the wall can climb up the bedrock.

  • A hint of spring

Building in winter is slow. Everything takes longer and becomes more complicated and expensive. We have made some progress, though. The last few days have felt like spring, even if winter made a brief comeback on Sunday. There have been some lovely days on site.

  • The service building

After the Epiphany holiday, we started on the service-building slab and the drainage trench. As with the garage, we began by bringing the gravel to the right level. It is important to cover it with insulation overnight so it does not freeze.

  • Garage, part two

The garage slab is finished. On Thursday, we installed the reinforcement: first the 12 mm edge-beam bars, then mesh on spacers to keep it at the right height. There is extra reinforcement under the column.

  • The garage foundation

The garage foundation is taking shape. On Monday, we finished the final gravel layer and the ducts for the incoming electricity, in miserable weather: rain and only a few degrees above freezing. Unfortunately, the foundation elements were delayed, so we spent much of Tuesday waiting. They did not ar

  • The garage and setting out

A lot is happening at once!

  • A little order

The sun has appeared three times this November, and we were at the plot for two of them. A good sign. 🙂

  • Rock, rock, rock—and a technical consultation

The blasting is finished, and the site is mostly a great heap of rubble. It will be interesting to see what it looks like once we have dug some of it out. Blasted rock takes up an astonishing amount of space. Hopefully, much of it can go under the garage slab, which needs to be…
